NALARE WILDLIFE CONSERVANCY:
The local community, our neighbours across the river, have set aside approximately 5,000 acres as a conservation area. This conservancy is called the 'Nalare Wildlife Conservancy'. The objectives of this conservancy are:-
- To conserve the natural habitat and its wildlife, bearing in mind the sensitive ecosystems of this area with beneficial co-existence between wildlife and the local community;
- To create jobs and provide a sustainable income from the conservancy and its
wildlife, in order to improve living standards.
- This conservancy forms part of the lobarishereki Community programme, and is registered with the laikipia Wildlife Forum. We at Sabuk are very much involved
with the local community, and have helped to set up the Nalare Wildlife Conservancy. ..
- The conservation fee we charge goes in part to this conservancy, and we pay the community a bed night fee per guest at Sabuk. A further payment is made any time guests camp or walk in the conservancy. This money goes towards funding the existing programmes, and developing new community projects designed to improve their living conditions and also to generate further employment. However, much more assistance is required, especially for both the lobarishereki Primary school, and nursery school.
- The community comprises of over 300 households, approximately 3,600 people, most of whom are children. The literacy levels are about 2%. Healthcare, hospitals, schools and clean drinking water are either seriously lacking, or even non-existent.
- So, we have come up with some suggestions for helping the children - if you wish to help sponsor a 'voluntary' teacher, perhaps you would consider giving the amount of U.S. $100 which would cover about one terms' salary for two teachers. Or, you could give $20, which covers the items set out in the tray displayed near the mess.
- Any contributions are very gratefully received, and should be given to the Manager.
Thank you - and we hope you enjoy your stay here.
